| A Field of Dreams! Washington Elementary School's Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for New Synthetic Turf Field. |
In 2001, the Washington Elementary School Turf Improvement
Project was identified by the community as the number five priority
of the Washington Neighborhood Improvement Plan. The joint
project, between the San Jose Unified School District and the City
of San Jose, is a revitalization effort to improve the school's
existing playgrounds as well as create more recreational
opportunities in the Washington neighborhood area. The Grand
Opening was held on Wednesday, March 17, 2007

The new 54,028 square feet of synthetic turf will replace an old playing field and irrigation systems saving
approimately 1 million gallons of water per year. The project utilizes recycles material made from 19,162 car tires.
A below-ground drainage system is designed to prevent water collection on the turf surface and allow for
year-round use. The play area is space for physical education and recreational programs. In addition, the school
field will serve as a public recreational facility during non-school hours.

| National Night Out San José Style! Neighborhood Associations Join Together To End Violence |
The Washington Community held it's 6th Annual Washington
Community National Night Out & Resource Fair. National Night
Out is an annual event designed to strengthen our
neighborhoods through police and community partnerships.
The goal is to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness,
build support and participation in local anti-crime programs.
National Night Out was held on Tuesday, August 7, 2007

| Haunted House Tradition Continues San José Downtown Neighborhood Celebrates 15 Years Of Frights & Festivities |
The Guadalupe/Washington Neighborhood Association
organized it's 15th Annual Haunted House & Festival on
Saturday, October 27, 2007 at the Washington United Youth
Center. The event featured a maze-like Haunted House with
over 15 different scare booths. Outside, parents & children
were invited to participate in carnival games, arts & crafts,
music, pumpkin walk and a photo booth with monsters.
Conceived in 1993 after a fatal drive-shooting in front of
Washington Elementary School, concerned parents, a
business owner & school principal organized the 1st
Annual Haunted House at the Elementary School with the
organized it's 15th Annual Haunted House & Festival on

help of generous funding from Los Amigos de Washington (Friends of Washington) a small group of Rotarians
who participated in school events. This event has grown from a budget of $1,000 to over $3,000 and with close to
